Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why is the FHC closing?

The availability of health services in the downtown area is dramatically expanded since the FHC opened 26 years ago. Given the expanded availability of services and the Kirkhof College of Nursing’s desire to focus resources on training the next generation of holistic care professionals, the decision was made to close the FHC.

When will the closure take place?

Primary care services will end on Sept. 30. The FHC will remain open until Nov. 30 to assist patients in finding new care options and assist in transferring patient care records.

What will happen to patient records?

Patient records will be transferred to a care provider chosen by the patient. Contact the FHC to explore your options.

How are patients being informed of their options?

FHC patients will receive a letter informing them of the closure that includes information about other care providers in the area as well as how to transfer their patient records.

What other resources does GVSU offer for faculty and staff seeking services offered at the FHC?

GVSU’s health plan offers many faculty and staff a broad range of options for care. In addition, the Campus Health Center in Allendale will continue to offer low-cost services to our campus community. (link)

What other resources do neighborhood residents have for services offered at FHC?

A broad range of primary care services are available from Cherry Health, Catherine’s Health Center, Corewell Health, Trinity Health and other providers. A list of care providers in the downtown area will be provided to all FHC patients.

What will happen to the staff at FHC?

Most FHC staff are either remaining part of the Kirkhof College of Nursing team or transitioning to offer services at other care providing organizations.
