The latest live Zoom webinar installment of the Grand Rapids Time Traveler series is "Great American Field Trip: The Omnibus College Experiment." On Friday, April 30 from 10:30 am - 11:30 am, historian Karen Sieber will share her research into the Omnibus College, a traveling experiment in higher education. During the 1920s and 1930s, hundreds of students every summer would embark on a cross-country trip with the Omnibus College, earning credit while exploring natural wonders, historic and cultural sites, places of industry, and other locations across the country. Sieber believes that these Omnibusters, many education majors or teachers themselves, were largely responsible for the growth in popularity of class field trips in the United States in the decades that followed. She will share photographs and mementos from past students, and detail the routes and classes the caravan of busses took, which included local stops in West Michigan and the larger Great Lakes region.
