ANT 380: Biblical Archaeology

This course provides an introduction to the study of the history, culture, and geography of ancient Israel, the ancient Near East, and the Mediterranean Basin from the Late Bronze Age through the early Roman period with an emphasis on illuminating the world of the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament and the Christian Scriptures/New Testament. The social, religious, and political traditions of ancient Israel and Judah are explored within this broader context, with special attention placed on the discussion of identity, the archaeological record, historical-critical methods, and ancient literary genres. The course will include interaction with maps, archaeological resources (artifacts and bones), and ancient Near Eastern comparative images and literature.
