The African American and Latin@ Alumni Chapters “Life Beyond on the Classroom” alumni panel discussion provided students with the opportunity to hear from alumni professionals about what it takes to prepare for life in the working world. Alumni in Detroit via video hookup connected with Allendale panelists and students for the hour and a half discussion.

Fellow GVSU alumni and friends gathered for a night of basketball at the Grand Rapids Drive, the Detroit Pistons NBA G League Affiliate, took on the Erie Bayhawks! Before the game, they enjoyed a Q&A with Piston’s legend, four-time NBA All Star, four-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year, World Champion, and Drive part-owner Ben Wallace.

The Academic Majors Fair was for undecided students to explore a variety of degrees and career paths before declaring a major. Each major was represented with a table staffed by a faculty member and an alumni volunteer who works in that field. The students related especially well to individuals who have been in their shoes and can speak about career paths based on real-world experience.

At Paving the Way for Future Generations: Stories of African Americans Who Were Firsts at Grand Valley, guests enjoyed reflecting on and paying tribute to the courageous individuals who helped pave the way for diversity at Grand Valley. The event was co-hosted by Grand Valley's Division of Inclusion and Equity and the African American Alumni Chapter.
