Jasmine Mancuso wins Journal of Great Lakes Research Award

Former Biddanda Lab Master's Graduate Jasmine Mancuso won the 2021 award for Most Notable Paper by an Early Career Scientist in Journal of Great Lakes Research.

Her paper, based on Master's dissertation research she did in the Biddanda Lab, details the odd dominance of diatoms in Muskegon Lake throughout spring into fall of 2019, a wet and cold year in Michigan. In normal years, we expect diatoms to only be dominant in the spring and give way to other types of green algae and cyanobacteria in the summer and fall; however, 2019 saw an anomalous event of continued diatom dominance due to the prevailing weather of that year. This research hold important implications in considering the impacts of climate change in the future as the climate and weather oscillate between the extremes of hot/dry and cold/wet.

Congratulations Jasmine!
