Biography

Raúl Peña is an Assistant Professor of Graphic Design. Originally from Bogotá, Colombia, Raúl joined the Art & Design faculty at Grand Valley State University in 2016, where he teaches beginning through advanced courses in Typography and Graphic Design. Before joining Grand Valley, Raúl worked for a wide variety of organizations and clients, having gained experience in many fields within the profession, including branding and identity design, advertising, print design, digital and mobile design, front-end development, user experience design, book and book cover design and illustration. His research is focused on the exploration of confluences between graphic design and music.  His work for the arts and culture industries has been published by Farrar Straus and Giroux, S. Fischer Verlag in Germany, Yep Roc Records and Northwestern University, among others. Raúl has received Addy and AIGA awards for his advertising and identity design work. In 2000, along with his band, Raúl received the 1st place award in a rock performance competition held by Tower Records in Bogotá. In 2008, one of his designs was featured in “1,000 Package Designs: A Comprehensive Guide to Packing It In.” He holds an MFA and BFA in Graphic Design and has studied poster design in Basel, Switzerland. Besides his role as a teacher, Raúl currently practices as an independent graphic designer, working with clients from around the country.
