The Fall of The Empire (2007) Frederic Rzewski (b. 1938)

The Prologue

Act 4: Global Warming

Act 5: The Ground

FredericRzewski’sThe Fall of the Empire consists of a prologue and seven “acts.” Each segment is a percussion solo with text spoken by the performer. The “acts” are set to a single instrument or a small multiple-percussion arrangement; in the latter case the performer chooses the instruments. The composer has suggested the extracted movements presented this evening as a short suite from the hour-long work:The Prologue, Global Warming, and The Ground.

The work taken in total reflects the different symptoms present in empires (current and throughout history) that crumble, disintegrate from within and ultimately collapse. The texts use dare from various  and unrelated sources including Dickens, MarkTwain, Thomas Jefferson, and the composer.

ZINE WORKSHOP

Zines appeal to younger audiences because they tend to be more honest in intentions than a traditional magazine. A zine is a low-circulation, non-commercial publication of original or appropriated texts and images, especially one of personal interest. In this workshop, children are encouraged to use their own passions and imaginations to make their own zine!

Panel Discussion

Discovering the History of an Object

Dr. Karen Trentelman
Senior Scientist at the Getty Conservation Institute

Dr. Karen Trentelman will lead a discussion on how current technologies can lead to a greater insight and understanding of the materiality and process of art. Discussion points include cutting-edge non-invasive digital reconstruction of art objects and historic artistic technologies. Through this research we gain insight into how the arts can inform the global nature of trade in ancient times to modern day and learn more about ourselves as humans and our commonalities.

This will be a follow up conversation from her presentation on  Thursday, October 10, 5 PM.

Bard to Go: Tossing on the Ocean

Bard to Go is a 50-minute program of scenes which gives students a lively, accessible introduction to Shakespeare in performance. The program is in its 19th year of touring to local Michigan schools.

Bard to Go: Tossing on the Ocean, takes the audience on a sea-faring journey with Prospero, a powerful magician, and his assistant Ariel, a magical spirit with strange powers. When Prospero and Ariel conjure a storm to shipwreck Prospero’s enemies, their magic spills over from their own play, The Tempest, and causes havoc for many of Shakespeare’s characters. This production includes scenes from The Tempest, Twelfth Night, Pericles, The Comedy of Errors, and The Merchant of Venice.
