Scholarships

Grand Valley State University (GVSU) and TRIO Upward Bound offer multiple scholarships to TRIO Upward Bound students, made possible by generous donations from community members, companies, and groups. This webpage provides a list of the scholarships specific to TRIO Upward Bound students: some of the scholarships are renewable for multiple semesters. Scholarships for GVSU's TRIO Upward Bound

Ira Brad Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is intended to be awarded to students who participated in the TRIO Upward Bound program with a dream to receive a college degree.

  • Candidates who have participated in the Upward Bound Program, a TRIO program incorporated within the Advising Resources & Special Programs unit at Grand Valley State University, will be given preference
  • Candidates who have participated in other TRIO programs offered in Grand Rapids or nationally will be considered if no participant from the GVSU Upward Bound Program applies
  • Incoming freshman who have participated in the TRIO Upward Bound program will be given preference. However, students at any undergraduate level may apply for this scholarship if they meet the criteria outlined herein.
  • Candidates must be accepted to GVSU, be degree seeking, attending GVSU and making satisfactory academic progress.
  • Financial need as defined by filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is required.

Award: Varies

Renewal Criteria: The scholarship may be renewed without reapplication for a max of (8) semesters provided the recipient continues to meet the qualifications.

Joan A. Panopoulos Scholarship

The scholarship is awarded to Grand Rapids Public School District students who have participated in the TRIO Upward Bound (UB) program. If no applications are received from GVSU TRIO UB students, students who have participated in other TRIO programs in Grand Rapids, MI and graduated from Grand Rapids Public Schools will be considered. In addition, former TRIO students who have graduated from Grand Rapids Public Schools and earned an Associates Degree from Grand Rapids Community College will be considered.

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide opportunities for graduates of the Grand Rapids Public Schools to attend college. The scholarship is designated to also benefit student who have participated in the TRiO Upward Bound program.

  • Candidates who have participated in the Upward Bound Program, a TRIO program incorporated within the Advising Resources & Special Programs unit at Grand Valley State will be given preference
  • Candidates from other TRIO programs who have graduated from Grand Rapids Public Schools may be considered if no one in the GVSU program applies
  • Must be an entering new freshman or transfer student from Grand Rapids Community College who have earned an Associate’s Degree
  • Entering freshmen must have a 3.0 cumulative high school GPA and a minimum ACT composite score of 18. Transfer students must have a prior college GPA of 3.0 or greater
  • Full-time student
  • Must demonstrate financial need by filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

Award: Varies

Renewal Criteria: Scholarships will be automatically renewed (no more than 10 semesters) provided the recipients continue to meet qualifications.

Maria I. Perez Nursing Scholarship

The purpose of this scholarship is to assist any nursing students pursuing a BSN degree (including non-traditional students and those pursuing a second degree) who are dedicated to promoting academic, professional and personal growth for people who have been historically underrepresented in the nursing profession. 

  • Recipients of this scholarship shall have been accepted for or currently enrolled at Grand Valley State University (GVSU)
  • They must be an undergraduate accepted and enrolled in the Kirkhof College of Nursing and shall be making Satisfactory Academic Progress
  • Preference will be given to candidates who have participated in any health related pre-college programs or federal pre-college programs such as TRIO or Upward Bound.

Award: $1,500

Renewal Criteria: This scholarship is non-renewable.

  1. Have you been admitted to the Kirkhof College of Nursing?
  2. Have you participated in any health related pre-college or federal pre-college programs such as TRIO or Upward Bound?
  3. Please write an essay describing your career goals, personal experiences (including your experience in health related pre-college or federal pre-college programs such as TRIO or Upward Bound if applicable) and your plans to promote academic, professional and personal growth and inclusion for people who have been historically underrepresented in the nursing profession.

Amos Sanders Jr. Memorial Scholarship

The purpose of this scholarship is to assist and encourage students with financial need who are graduates of urban schools or who participated in Upward Bound/TRIO programs.

  • Recipients of this scholarship shall have been accepted for or currently enrolled at GVSU.
  • Must be an undergraduate entering his/her senior year
  • Enrolled for 12 credit hours or more in any course of study
  • Must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or greater meet satisfactory academic progress standards
  • Preference will be given to candidates who are graduates of urban schools as identified by admissions and candidates who participated in Upward Bound/TRIO programs.

Award: $1,000.00

Renewal Criteria: This scholarship may not be renewed.

  2. If so, please list which program(s) and the years of involvement.
  3. Please describe your career goals, your experience in Upward Bound/TRIO programs if applicable, and how receiving this scholarship will help you in their final year of studies.

Steele A. and Mary D. Taylor Pathway to Education Scholarship

This scholarship was made available for those who have participated in the TRIO Upward Bound Program, a TRIO program within GVSU followed by those from TRIO programs in Grand Rapids Public Schools.

  • Candidates who have participated in the Upward Bound Program, a TRIO program incorporated within the Advising Resources & Special Programs unit at Grand Valley State will be given preference
  • Must be enrolled full or part-time in a degree-seeking major
  • Students must have a GPA of 3.0 and an ACT score of 18 or better
  • Students must demonstrate financial need by completing the FAFSA
  • Transfer students must have a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale
  • Transfer students Must be GRPS grads with an Associates Degree from Grand Rapids Community College

Award: Varies

Renewal Criteria: Scholarship may be awarded for a maximum of 10 semesters if student continues to meet the criteria and and satisfactory academic progress.

  3. In a short paragraph please explain the level in which you were involved in this program and also describe the program that you participated in.

Whitney Young Outreach Engineering Scholarship

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide funding for engineering students.

  • Candidates who meet one or more of the following will be given additional consideration:
    1. Graduates of urban public schools
    2. Transfer student from community college
    3. Participants of TRIO or Upward Bound programs
    4. Participants of Padnos College of Engineering and Computing outreach activities such as STEPS, AIME, FIRST, MATHCOUNTS
    5. Participants of GRAPCEP, GEARUP Michigan or a similar program any time during their K-12 educations
    6. Lived in Section 8 or Section 236 housing
  • Must be accepted and enrolled with full-time degree seeking status in the School of Engineering
  • Must be Junior or Senior level students with minimum of 55 credit hours and cumulative GPA of 2.7 or greater
  • Shall be making satisfactory academic progress according to the norms established by the University and the School of Engineering as applicable
  • Transfer candidates must be accepted by GVSU for enrollment and be attending the University

Renewal Criteria: Renewable for a maximum of 3 years

Supplemental Questions on the scholarship application:

  1. Attach a typed essay written about yourself and your interest in engineering. Refer to the description of the scholarship for specific topics to be addressed in your essay. Help the Engineering Scholarship Committee understand your uniqueness and see you as a person, as a student, and as a future member of the engineering profession. To accomplish this, it would be best if you wrote in the first person. Remember that the Committee will read many essays, and you must make them understand why you should receive a scholarship. Your essay will weigh heavily in their decision.
  2. Whitney Young Outreach:
    • Did you live in Section 8 or Section 236 housing?
    • Were you a graduate of an urban public school?
    • Were you a participant of GRAPCEP, GEARUP Michigan or a similar program any time during your K-12 education?
    • Were you a participant of Padnos College of Engineering and Computing outreach activities such as STEPS, AIME, FIRST, MATHCOUNTS?
