Community Involvement

Community involvement and volunteer hours reflect favorably on a college application. It shows that students possess desirable values, such as a sense of social responsibility and a commitment to community.

Students in GVSU TRIO UB  are required to reach out to their community by volunteering several hours each month. They also participate in group community service projects organized by the program. Examples of service projects and/or volunteer sites are:

  • Baxter Community Center
  • Grand Rapids Public Museum
  • Porter Hills Village Retirement Community
  • Kent County Prevention Coalition
  • Kids Food Basket
  • Laughfest
  • Groundswell
  • Walk to Cure Diabetes

In addition to local community projects, our summer trips also involve volunteerism. The students have cleaned up wetlands in Seattle, WA; served in soup kitchens in San Francisco, CA; and worked in senior citizen buildings in Baltimore, MD.
