Sustainable Holiday Guide

Did you know?

  • Americans produce about 25% more trash between Thanksgiving and New Year's?

  • If every American family wrapped just 3 presents in reused materials, it would save enough paper to cover 45,00 football fields.

  • About 35% of Americans have an unused Christmas present collecting dust in their closets.

  • The 2.65 billion Christmas cards sold each year in the United States could fill a football field 10 stories high

  • Half of the paper America consumes is used to wrap and decorate consumer products.

  • The average Christmas/New Year’s long-distance trip is 275 miles long.

The holiday's bring joy to many people and it is a wonderful time to celebrate with friends, family and colleagues. It is a time to be thankful for the good in our lives and show appreciation to the ones we love.

On the negative side, this is also a time of excessive consumption, waste, and use of natural resources. The Office of Sustainability Practices at GVSU has created this guide to provide the community with tips to reduce their impact during the holiday season.
