Psychology

"The world is a smaller place, and a more interdependent place, than we imagine. We are immersed in our own culture like a fish in water, and we often can't even see it until we get a perspective from outside our culture."

- Mary Bower-Russa, Professor of Psychology

Imagine yourself studying psychology in Vienna, Austria, the hometown of famous psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, arguably one of the most influential contributors to the field itself.  Explore the history and development of the field from a truly unique vantage point that will distinguish you from your classmates. Gain the opportunity to take interesting classes that Grand Valley doesn’t offer, such as, The Psychology of Crisis, Music and the Mind, or The Neuroscience of Fear, just to name a couple.  You may also pursue internships such as Autism Care in Australia or Substance Abuse Services in New Zealand.  You will be able to work toward the completion of your major/minor from nearly anywhere in the world and undoubtedly add a life-changing experience to your resume.

Academic Advice

  • As a Psychology student, you can study abroad at almost any time during your undergraduate career. You may fulfill your General Education prerequisites, you may take Psychology courses, or you may apply for research credits while abroad.
  • The Psychology Department does not give credit for internships, either in the US or abroad.
  • The psychology department asks that students talk with their adviser at least 3 months prior to departing to work out psychology course equivalencies.
  • It is recommended that students don’t fulfill the Psychology Capstone requirement abroad.
  • Consider fulfilling your Issues General Education requirement abroad. Find out how!

Restrictions

  • Courses will be reviewed on a case to case basis through the course equivalency process.
  • While you can ask us to review the program you mention, it is unlikely we would accept it for psychology credit.  As a matter of department policy, we do not transfer independent study or internship credit from other institutions (whether or not they are in a different country)

Keep in Mind

  • Once you have selected a program, be sure to meet with your adviser at least three months prior to departing for your program.
