Chemistry

Borders are virtually meaningless in this early 21st century global economy. As a future graduate with a Chemistry major or minor degree, you will be confronting global issues and will work in internationally-operated companies. "Wake up and face the earth!" T. Friedman advised us in his bestseller ‘The World is Flat’.

Academic Advice

FIRST YEAR AND SOPHOMORE STUDENTS

First Year Students

The earliest you can go abroad is the summer of your first year.

Students may fulfill General Education Foundation and/or Issues requirements abroad.

Sophomore Students & Upperclassmen

  • Chemistry students considering Study Abroad should first schedule a meeting with their academic adviser to discuss options as early as possible. Due to the structured nature of science curricula and the fact that other countries often arrange chemistry content differently, finding appropriate equivalent courses requires consultation with your advisers and planning out your schedule a year or more in advance is recommended.
  • Students may take courses to satisfy requirements in their Chemistry Major, Minor, or General Education. Students may also apply for research credits while abroad.
  • The Chemistry department strongly recommends that juniors explore the possibility of summer research/internship programs abroad. Projects with dual supervision from a foreign adviser and a GVSU chemistry faculty are strongly encouraged.
  • If interested in research, students should first discuss this opportunity with their chemistry adviser; they may enroll at GVSU in a research course such as CHM 399 or CHM 499, supervised by GVSU faculty, and earn credit for it while abroad.
  • Consider fulfilling your Issues General Education requirement abroad.
  • No restrictions have been identified by the Chemistry department.
  • Courses will be reviewed on a case by case basis through the course equivalency process.

Keep in Mind

  • Once you have selected a program to be sure to meet with your adviser at least three months before departing for your program.
  • Be sure to explore both GVSU and External options by browsing the Program Suggestions below. Students are not limited to GVSU study abroad programs.
  • There are several opportunities to intern and or volunteer while abroad.
  • Students can fulfill the General Education Foundation requirements abroad as well as their General Education Issues requirement (reflection paper required). If you take at least 3 credits abroad, your Global Perspectives General Education requirement will automatically be fulfilled.
