Chemistry

Borders are virtually meaningless in this early 21st century global economy. As a future graduate with a Chemistry major or minor degree, you will be confronting global issues and will work in internationally-operated companies. "Wake up and face the earth!" T. Friedman advised us in his bestseller ‘The World is Flat’.

An international experience will provide you not only with essential skills to work effectively in industry, education, or the public sector but will touch and change all the facets of your life by the experience of living in another culture, will strengthen your character, and will broaden your mind.

Academic Advice

  • Chemistry students considering Study Abroad should first review the materials under the “Getting Started” tab above and then schedule a meeting with their academic advisor to discuss options as early as possible. Due to the structured nature of science curricula and the fact that other countries often arrange chemistry content differently, finding appropriate equivalent courses requires consultation with your advisors and planning out your schedule a year or more in advance is recommended.
  • Students may take courses to satisfy requirements in their Chemistry Major, Minor, or general education. Students may also apply for research credits while abroad.
  • The Chemistry department strongly recommends that juniors explore the possibility of summer research/internship programs abroad. Projects with dual supervision from a foreign adviser and a GVSU chemistry faculty are strongly encouraged.
  • If interested, students should first discuss this opportunity with their chemistry adviser; they may enroll at GVSU in a research course such as CHM 399 or CHM 499, supervised by GVSU faculty, and earn credit for it while abroad.
  • Consider fulfilling your Issues General Education requirement abroad. Find out how!

Restrictions

  • No restrictions have been identified by the Chemistry department.
  • Courses will be reviewed on a case by case basis through the course equivalency process.

Keep in Mind

  • Once you have selected a program, be sure to meet with your adviser at least three months prior to departing for your program.
  • Be sure to explore both GVSU and non-GVSU options by browsing the Program Suggestions above. Students are not limited to GVSU study abroad programs.
  • There are several opportunities to intern and or volunteer while abroad.
  • Students are also able to fulfill general education requirements abroad, including their General Education Issues requirement.
