All students can vote for up to ten (10) candidates for Student Senate. There are forty-four (44) positions available.

Elections are open 8:00 AM on SEPT 14 to 11:59 PM on SEPT 20.

WRITE-IN CANDIDATES: To win as a write-in candidate, you must receive at least one hundred (100) votes and be one of the top forty-four (44) highest vote getters. Students may write-in a candidate at the bottom of the voting page. Correct spelling is highly recommended.

Campaign Rules & Regulations

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we urge all candidates to conduct all campaigning virtually or in no-contact ways, such as announcing in class.

  • To get on the ballot, candidates must fill out this form before Friday, September 11 at 5:00 p.m.

  • No verbal and/or printed campaigning is permitted within 20 feet of any GV desktop computer on campus.

  • No candidate may use any paid web advertisements or the GVSU Events Calendar to publicize his/her candidacy.

  • No campaign materials may be displayed in classrooms for any individual candidate.

  • No campaign shall be funded by any outside entity, business, corporation, or political action committee (PAC).

  • All campaign materials must be approved per the Grand Valley State University posting policy (i.e. campaign materials must display the appropriate stamp(s) and be posted ONLY in approved areas).

  • Public address systems, other mechanical or electrical sound equipment are prohibited for on campus campaigning.

  • No campaign material may include the name of more than one candidate unless each person listed has given authorization. The number of people allowed to campaign together may not exceed three. Authorization must also be obtained from the Elections Commission.  Contact the Elections Commission at for information on how to authorize such campaign materials.

  • If there appears to be clear evidence of a campaign of more than three people, or some form of a slate, ALL individuals involved will be disqualified immediately at the discretion of the Elections Commission.

****All campaigning must adhere to the campaign rules outlined in this packet.  Any infractions of these rules must be reported in writing to the Elections Commission by the third day after the elections close.


All members of the Senate are EXPECTED to:

  1. All members of Student Senate should be available in Allendale on Thursdays from 4:30 p.m. through the end of the General Assembly meeting. These will be conducted via Zoom throughout the Fall 2020 semester. Students should not have classes or other responsibilities on Thursday evenings.

  2. Attend scheduled meetings of, and complete work for, your assigned committee.

  3. Serve two (2) office hours weekly in the Student Senate office or perform an approved two-hour Senate activity. *Subject to change due to COVID-19*

  4. Expectations of a Student Senator in brief:
    a. Further outlines regarding expectations and responsibilities will be laid out by your vice president if elected, this is just a brief overview of the overall expectations regarding Student Senators
    b. Positivity: Coming to meetings/ Senate related events and approaching all work with a positive mental attitude and ready effort to serve your peers.
    c. Persistence: Senate projects and efforts usually take time, however gradual and continuous progress is expected.
    d. Understand that you are here to serve the whole student body, some people may disagree with you however you are there to represent them and their voice, not your own opinion.
    e. You are in this role to help your fellow Lakers and improve the GVSU community. Not for a resume builder, political gain, or other faculty expectations.
    f. Understand that often the time commitment of a general senator is roughly 10 hours a week including general assembly (GA), office hours, and committee meetings.
    g. Professionalism is key seeing that we work hand in hand with the administration and community members. Respect your peers, GVSU staff, community partners, and fellow senators.
    h. This role is an honor and a privilege. It is a competitive race and as the student governing body, we hold a lot of influence. Respect this, be empowered by this, and utilize it to help your peers!
    i. It is expected for senators to speak up, be engaged in conversation, stay up to date in information and changing concerns of the student body.
    j. Last but not least, have fun! Senate is some of GV’s best and brightest.


All members of the Senate must:

  1. Be currently enrolled at Grand Valley State University and enrolled during the time the position is filled.

  2. Maintain a minimum of a 2.25 cumulative grade point average at all times for all Senators.

  3. Maintain a minimum of a 2.5 cumulative grade point average at all times for all Cabinet members.

Campaign Funding

There is a $100 maximum spending limit per campaign team on campaigning materials. Any purchasing of campaign materials must be tracked, and a photo of receipts should be sent to

***Spending of campaign or personal funds for one campaign, which can consist of up to 3 candidates, run in one academic year in an election is limited to a total of $100 (one hundred dollars). Campaign funds include all donations of materials, assessed at an average retail value, and all monetary contributions, including money spent by the candidate. An itemized list of sources and uses of campaign funds shall be signed by the candidate and provided to the Chair of the Elections Commission no less than three days after the election.***
