Biochemistry, BS

Student Outcomes

Assessment of Student Outcomes

Outcome A Mastery

Students will develop knowledge of core chemistry concepts.
Objective 1 Students will consistently rank above the 60th percentile on the standardized ACS Organic Chemistry Exam.

Outcome B Writing

Students will be able to produce quality scientific writing.
Objective 2 Students will produce a piece of scientific writing that would be suitable as a draft of a journal publication.

Outcome C Mastery (biochem)

Biochemistry students will be able to explain and apply chemistry concepts.
Objective 3 Biochemistry students will consistently rank above the 60th percentile on the standardized ACS Organic Chemistry Exam.

Measure 1

2018 Status
Achieved
During the two years preceding, the number of students meeting this goal increased from 61% to 89%. This year, there was a small decrease from 2017 (83% of CHM 247 students met the target).

Measure 2

2018 Status
Achieved
During the two years preceding, the number of students meeting this goal fell from 83% to 69%. This year, student performance continued on that trajectory (50% of CHM 242 students met the target). However, we would argue that this number represents only a very small number of our majors as most enroll in CHM 247. If we combine the two courses, 72% of our students met this objective (nearing our aspirational goal of 75%).

Outcome D Communication (biochem)

Biochemistry Majors be able to communicate (both written and oral) in a manner consistent with professional practices.
Objective 4 Biochemistry students will demonstrate the ability to communicate (both written and oral) in a manner consistent with professional practices.

Measure 1

2018 Status
Not Yet Achieved
In 2016/2017, 43% of our students met this criteria. In 2017/2018, the portion of students successfully meeting this metric fell to 38%.

Outcome I Lab skills

Students will be able to demonstrate proficiency in basic laboratory skills
Objective 9 Students will be able to demonstrate the correct use of standard chemical equipment and instrumentation.

Outcome M Oral

Students will be able to organize and present scientific ideas orally
Objective 8 Students will be able to coherently and effectively present science ideas in an oral presentation.

Outcome N Literature

Students will develop skills for searching the chemical literature.
Objective 10 Students will demonstrate the ability to effectively access, search, and use the chemical research literature.

Outcome S Career and Civic Engagement

Students will develop the skills to successfully pursue their career objectives
Objective 11 Students will be able to identify elements of their major that have helped prepare them in obtaining their career goals.
