McNair Scholar and sociology major Kelli Bowers
Kelli Bowers is a senior sociology major and current GVSU McNair Scholar. She is also an intern for the GVSU Office of Undergraduate Research and Scholarship. Kelli studies under the mentorship of Dr. Jennifer Stewart, Associate Professor in the GVSU Sociology Department. Dr. Stewart has expertise in the sociology of race and ethnicity, with additional scholarly interests in the sociology of food. Dr. Stewart received her Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina.
Kelli is from the small town of Truxton, Arizona just outside of the Hualapai Indian Reservation. Kelli chose to study sociology primarily to examine the impact of systemic social inequality on marginalized populations within the United States. Kelli’s current research in the McNair Scholars Program focuses that broad interest by qualitatively analyzing newspaper representations of missing and murdered indigenous women in the U.S. Kelli’s work was accepted for presentation at both the Midwest Sociological Association, and the Michigan Sociological Association, annual conferences.
Next fall, Kelli plans to pursue a PhD in sociology and/or public policy. In her future career, she would like to work in state or federal policy and legislation, focusing on health care reform.
GVSU McNair Scholars participate in a 15-month program which includes academic and career counseling, a paid summer research experience, faculty mentoring, and graduate school application preparation.
