Keynote address: Our Globe, Our Profession, and Our Influence: Paradoxes of Advances and Global Health Inequities
Abstract
Medical advances abound, global health inequities deepen,
especially in the global south. In this speech, I will seek to point
out that health professionals have a significant impact on how healthy
the world becomes. I will seek to show (with examples from across the
world) that in spite of the risky sacrifices health professionals
make, there are still significant inequities. I will seek to show how
the desire to provide healthcare to populations drives and unite
health professionals everywhere in the world. I will argue that in
spite of these global commitments from health professionals, the
paradoxes of complex, wicked, and bizarre health challenges in spite
of advances in medicine require a new approach to health care – one
that shares healthcare resources – first health professionals and
secondly health infrastructure and materials between different
countries of the world.
