Message from Our Dean
At the College of Computing, Computing Lakers Always Reach Higher — driving technology, innovation, and impact to new heights. This year, we have transformed our college to better serve students, industry, the greater Grand Rapids area, the State of Michigan, and our global community as detailed in our new strategic plan. With new programs, groundbreaking partnerships, and bold initiatives, we are equipping Computing Lakers with the skills, experience, and opportunities to lead in an evolving digital world.
Computing Lakers shape the future. With six new degrees in artificial intelligence, software engineering, and human-centered computing, we are preparing students for the cutting edge of technology. These degree pathways were shaped by insights from our industry partner brainstorming sessions, where 180 companies collaborated with our faculty to design programs that meet industry demands and future workforce needs. Our forward-thinking vision continues with the launch of two new departments, the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Information Sciences and Technologies, starting July 1, 2025. These departments will drive research, innovation, and specialized expertise.
Computing Lakers propel research and innovation. Our faculty are leading groundbreaking research, supported by more than 30 grant proposals in AI, cybersecurity, and beyond, pushing the boundaries of discovery and impact. A cohort of outstanding faculty was hired to join us in Fall 2025. Innovation Days in December 2024 and April 2025 brought together industry leaders, students, and faculty to foster meaningful collaboration across all levels of the tech ecosystem, with a special emphasis on AI and cybersecurity. These efforts ensure that Computing Lakers remain leaders of technological advancement and thoughtful leadership.
Computing Lakers have a global reach. With six new international partnerships spanning Tunisia, Indonesia, India, and France, we are building a truly global network of opportunities for students and faculty. The demand for collaboration continues to grow, with over a dozen universities worldwide eager to partner with us. Our national executive advisory board keeps us ahead of industry needs, ensuring our programs remain cutting-edge. Meanwhile, the exchange scholar program brings international experts to campus, infusing our research labs with world-class talent.
Computing Lakers build bridges. We are breaking down barriers in education, workforce development, and industry collaboration. Our bridge courses help students transition into computing careers and graduate programs. These courses are designed for learners from all backgrounds, including those without prior experience in computing, creating accessible pathways into high-demand fields. By democratizing computing and partnering with industry leaders, we ensure our curriculum is aligned with real-world needs, giving students a competitive edge.
Computing Lakers lead the way. As we look ahead, our focus remains on empowering students, deepening industry and global partnerships, supporting the success of our faculty and staff, and advancing workforce development. Many of the stories in this report showcase how Computing Lakers always reach higher. At GVSU, we don’t just prepare students for the future — we empower them to define it.
