Will Power Summer Camp
Grand Valley Shakespeare Festival's Will Power Summer Camp strives to create a fun, imaginative and exciting environment for children to discover the art of theatre and the works of William Shakespeare through exploring the process of drama.
About the Camp:
Grand Valley Shakespeare Festival's Will Power Summer Camp is a weeklong day camp for elementary school aged kids. The number one goal of camp is for campers to have fun and be given the opportunity of expanding their imagination. They will spend one week learning about one of Shakespeare's plays and experiencing the process of drama through many kinds of theatre activities.
Counselors are comprised of Grand Valley theatre and education students who help also help with teaching. Your camper will have the opportunity to spend part of their day with highly qualified, professional actors from Michigan's own Pigeon Creek Shakespeare Company. Pigeon Creek actors will lead campers in an array of workshops from the language of Shakespeare to safe stage combat.
Each session revolves around one of Shakespeare's works as we explore the four foundations of theatre: improvisation, ensemble, characterization and language. The week ends with a showcase for friends and family to share what campers have experienced and accomplished during the week.
The Will Power experience is based on the process of drama not the product. Our goal is to have campers use their imagination and discover the process of play that goes into creating theatre performances. Campers will learn theatre vocabulary, explore elements of storytelling, and expand their imagination.
About Our Guest Artists:
Founded in 1998, the Pigeon Creek Shakespeare Company is Michigan's only year-round, touring Shakespeare company. Pigeon Creek produces 5 full-length productions each year, touring shows all over Michigan and out of state. Previous tours have taken the company's actors as far away as Virginia, Iowa, and New York City. Pigeon Creek's extensive educational programming includes day camps, in-class workshops for students from elementary to university levels, special matinee performances for high school students, and the unique and innovative high school residency program, in which Pigeon Creek's professional actors rehearse and perform a full-length production of one of Shakespeare's plays alongside a cast of high school students. Pigeon Creek's educational programs have received multiple grants, including two recent grants from Target Stores. The company's teaching artists are highly experienced Shakespearean actors who also have significant classroom teaching experience at levels from pre-school through university.
