Duties of Volunteer
Would you like to read to a patient who can no longer see the pages? Play cards with someone who is lonely? Watch a Tigers game with a patient while their spouse goes out to get groceries? Document an amazing life for someone who wants to leave their story behind for their loved ones? Sing or play music - connecting a patient to another time in their life? Spectrum Health Hospice is looking for additional volunteers thru out our 11 county West Michigan service territory (volunteers choose what geographic area they would like support patients)that are interested in brightening our patient's week by sharing approx. 1hr/week with them. This opportunity is a significant encouragement, helps with feelings of loneliness and is a unique component of the patient's care plan.

Details of special training
Free training program - 1 year commitment required. After completing the application process. Our volunteer training consists of 13.5 hours of training split into 2 components. The first component is a 5.5 hour on-line training consisting of 16 short educational sessions with competency quizzes. The second component is an 8 hour in-person orientation. These sessions are offered as a classroom style learning experience. They are scheduled multiple times thru out the year in a range of geographic areas in 1 day (8hrs) option or a 2 day (4hr/day) option.

A kind compassionate spirit that desires to provide dignity to all people at end of life. Strong communication skills and follow-thru; valuing being part of a patient's care team. Enjoy making a difference for someone during their last months, weeks and days of life. A willingness to provide support within the guidelines of the volunteer role while practicing appropriate boundaries and good self-care. Ability to commit to volunteering with our program for a minimum for 1 year. Reliable transportation. Willingness to obtain 2 TB tests and an annual flu shot during flu season (these medical requirements are completed thru our training program at no cost to the incoming volunteers.
