Lyndsey Herndon, MSA

Lyndsey Herndon, graduated with her MSA from the Seidman College of Business

What were your professional goals when you started the MSA program? How did the Seidman MSA program help you achieve your goals?

When I started the MSA program my professional goals included expanding my professional network and entering a new career path in accounting. The Seidman MSA program helped me achieve my goals as I formed connections with professors, such as Dr. Cannon and Dr. Grant. Both individuals took the time to invest in me and help me navigate the differences in how you pursue a degree and career in business versus education. Doors were opened by my willingness to say “yes” to opportunities to talk with individuals at different firms as well as join extra-curricular events such as the Data Analytics Competition.

What content or skills did you learn in the MSA program that you regularly use today?

Some of the most valuable skills I developed during my time in the MSA program include communication (both written and verbal), how to advocate for yourself, and how to efficiently look for answers to problems. I use the accounting knowledge from all my core classes, but some of the most important technical skills were how to, efficiently and effectively, read financial statements and navigate Data Analytics.

What was the most rewarding part of the Seidman MSA program?

The most rewarding part of the Seidman MSA program was being prepared academically to sit for and pass my CPA exam.

How were you challenged during the MSA program?

During the MSA program, I was challenged to determine the path I wanted to start this next career with. For me this included making connections with local businessmen and women at public accounting firms, banks, and hotels to identify what I wanted for next steps.

What advice would you give to someone who is considering a Seidman MSA?

I would advice individuals considering enrolling in a Seidman master’s program to engage with professors, alumni and/or current students to develop a relationship with them that will serve you for years to come, whether that be professionally, personally, or both.

How was your Seidman MSA helpful to you in advancing your career?

My Seidman MSA program has been helpful in advancing my career because the further you advance in your career the more opportunities you receive outside of your job title. For example, I had great experiences in recruiting, mock interviews, and career path conversations. These experiences have helped shape how I interact with recruits, interview potential interns/full time hires, and advise others on career steps.

If you were talking with someone today who is evaluating MSA programs, what criteria would you recommend they weigh the most in making a decision and why?

When talking with individuals evaluating masters’ programs in business, I recommend they first consider what they can imagine themselves doing in 10-15 years. This helps form the decision of what program would be best for their future.
