Description
Join GVSU Outdoor Adventures to experience The night sky of Michigan at the our very own International Dark Sky Park!
The Headlands was established in the late 1950s when Roger McCormick hired a helicopter and dropped 50lb. sacks of flour to mark the boundaries of a property he desired to purchase.The Park contains approximately 550 acres of pristine woodlands, more than two miles of undeveloped Lake Michigan shoreline and many species of rare and endangered plant life. Visitors to the Headlands may experience sightings of the many wild animals native to the area including: bald eagles, osprey, white tail deer, wild turkeys, coyotes and occasionally a black bear. Marked nature trails guide hikers, bicyclists, cross-country skiers, and nature photographers to experience the park throughout the changing seasons.
The Headlands became one of the first 10 International Dark Sky Parks in the world in 2011, a prestigious designation bestowed by the International Dark Sky Association in Tucson, Arizona, after a rigorous application and review process. What it means in a nutshell? The Headlands will stay dark and protected, forever, thanks to a commitment by the Emmet County Board of Commissioners.
Throughout your GVSU Outdoor Adventures experience, you will learn
skills that actually prepare you for life after course. These
transferable skills begin to take shape on trail - like collaborating
with others as a part of a team, caring for yourself and others on
course by preparing meals and building your shelter each night and
overcoming challenges that at first seemed insurmountable but in the
end were achievable. These skills travel with you back home, to school
or to your workplace and help you succeed with new perspective and the
discovery that there is more in you than you know.

Early Bird (10/01/19) = $150
Regular
Price (10/11/19) = $175
Depart: Friday October 18 2019 at 4pm
Return: Monday October 21 2019 at 5pm
Included: Transportation, campsite,dinner, and
technical gear as needed.
Required Pre-Trip Meetings: Friday October 11th @
6pm in FH Room
Instructions: The van will leave from the Fieldhouse
circle drive (across from Mackinac hall. Participants should plan to
arrive by 3:45pm.
Packing List: Will be provided after registration.
Meals: GVSU Outdoor Adventures will provide a group dinner for each night. Breakfast, lunch, and snacks are participant responsibility.
