Club Sports Operations FAQ

Typically, the minimum number of club members is 8. Since competition is suspended indefinitely, RecWell is requiring that all club sports have at least 5 members to be active. This ensures that all required E-board positions are filled.

Please Note: Only GVSU students are eligible to participate in club sports. All non-students interested in becoming affiliated must do so as a coach/instructor and approved by RecWell.

Assistant Director, Mitch Eastlick, will send information to club leaders directly to schedule training sessions this winter.

No, club sports teams cannot travel during the fall semester. The university policy on travel is listed below.

  • GVSU is committed to the health and safety of students, faculty, and staff.  Due to health concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic and increased risks associated with travel, GVSU has prohibited all non-essential travel (source: Lakers Together Handbook).
  • Travel guidance for Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) follows the above-mentioned university policy.  Because RSO travel is considered non-essential to the university’s operations, it will not be permitted for the duration that the university travel prohibition is in place. RSOs are defined as student organizations registered through the Office of Student Life, including Club Sports organizations administered by the department of Recreation & Wellness. A complete listing of RSOs can be found on Laker Link
  • Please reach out to Mike Przydzial if you have further questions.

Yes, clubs who do not have the option of an adequate facility on-campus to participate in their sport can reserve space off-campus under the following parameters:

  1. Have a hired Coach (funded by RecWell) supervising all team activity.
  2. Have a facility-use agreement on file and signed with the RecWell office.

Yes, clubs can request funding from the Club Sports Executive Council for Winter 2021 facility expenses. Any facility expenses exceeding a club's allotted amount must be cleared monthly prior to hosting any additional training sessions.

If off-campus clubs would like to reserve facility space on campus for training sessions, please contact Assistant Director, Mitch Eastlick. Note that clubs who normally use facilities on campus will receive priority scheduling.

Yes, clubs can still have tryouts. Please confirm that your selection process is outlined in your club's constitution and that the process is followed.

Your club may determine to opt-out of all activity. RecWell will continue to support your organization with various engagement opportunities until parameters can be met in future semesters.
