Position Description:

Under the Division of Student Affairs, this position will report within the department of Recreation & Wellness. The primary role of the graduate assistant is to help foster inclusion in recreation and wellness programming. This role will work closely with another Adaptive Inclusive Recreation & Wellness Graduate Assistant whose focus is on adaptive events and programs.

Responsibilities:

Inclusive Marketing and Outreach (55%)

  • Represent RecWell through participation and promotion during key events that help promote inclusive Recreation. Examples may include, Campus Life Night, educational outreach, HRL programs, RecFest, etc.
  • Assess effectiveness of the Recreation & Wellness for Everybody campaign. Augment the campaign to a university-wide initiative; advocating for inclusion in all recreation and wellness enterprises at GVSU.
  • Maintain and foster relationships and connections with campus and community partners, including campus units and organizations that support underrepresented students
  • Work closely with current Adaptive and Inclusive Recreation GA to promote adaptive and inclusive events and programs.

 

Student Advisory Board and Department Strategy (35%)

  • Support the Student Advisory Board (SAB) to ensure student voices are heard and valued while confirming recommendations are equitable, adaptive, and inclusive
    • Includes setting meeting agenda, communicating with student members, meeting with RecWell Director regularly, creating action plans for the department and more.
  • Utilize findings of previous needs analyses on inclusive recreation programming for GVSU and make recommendations for department
  • Review the criteria for Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education related to recreational inclusion and diversity. Outline actions for RecWell to meet and/or exceed these standards.
  • Assist department in implementing NIRSA’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, competencies and outcomes into RecWell’s programs, services, staffing and development.

 

Event and Programming Support (10%)

  • Work closely with current Adaptive and Inclusive Recreation GA to support ongoing program planning and implementation (ie. Wheelchair sports, IM bowling league, etc.)
  • Assist with adaptive and inclusive program implementation for upcoming year.

Qualifications

  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated work that supports active involvement in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
  • Undergraduate degree in communication, marketing, public health, allied health or related field preferred but not required
  • Current CPR and First Aid Certification preferred but not required
  • Acceptance into graduate program at GVSU required

Terms

The position will begin on August 29, 2022 until April 22, 2023. Work schedule will follow the academic calendar and may include limited working hours during the scheduled semester breaks.


Compensation

  • A stipend of $4,000 for the 9-month appointment working 10 hours per week, tuition waver for up to 9 credits per year (4.5 credits in Fall and 4.5 credits in Winter). Please advise this is limited to a one-academic year appointment.
  • Professional development funding is available and additional summer employment opportunities are available.

Additional Information

Workspace: A workstation will be provided in the Recreation and Wellness Office suite, a private office area will be provided as needed for the GA to use as needed.

Training: Orientation will be planned for an agreed upon time in the month of August, unless the GA’s schedule conflicts, then it would be their first week of the semester start. Orientation will in will include a number of topics including introductions, review of policies and procedures, spaces and a review of the GA’s responsibilities and working schedule.

Supervision and Evaluation: this position will have weekly interactions with both primary supervisors and secondary, and have additional guidance from campus partners. Team meetings will occur weekly with the RecWell department. Evaluation and feedback will be ongoing but formally conducted each semester with progress updates and an end of year performance evaluation.

Selection process: applicants will be reviewed by a search committee following very similar selection practices that Human Resources conducts. An Inclusion Advocate will be included in the search process. Web interviews will be conducted and references will be contacted.
