Service Opportunities

GVSU PT students volunteer to provide pro bono physical therapy services to those in the community who cannot afford health care. The clinic is currently run weekly at the Family Health Center in Grand Rapids. Students serve as clinic coordinators and volunteer along with community and faculty physical therapists to provide the services. Additionally, students assist with Parkinson’s exercise classes weekly, and a group of students travels yearly to Guatemala for a week long service learning experience. Students consistently comment on the positive nature of these experiences and the personal and professional learning opportunities they create.

Grand Valley Wheel Run: April 7, 2018 from 10am-1pm
The Grand Valley State University physical therapy students have annually put on the Wheel Run 10K & 5K run, 5K walk and 1 mile fun walk since 1997. The tradition began when a group of students wanted to provide an opportunity for wheelchair and running athletes to enjoy a fun and challenging event together. For the past 13 years, the proceeds have been donated to Alternatives in Motion, an organization that provides wheelchairs to individuals without adequate health insurance. The goal is to raise over $10,000 for Alternatives in Motion. Join us for the 22st Annual Wheel Run Together 5K! Run, walk, or hand cycle your way through GVSU's beautiful Allendale Campus. All proceeds go directly to support a local non-profit organization called Alternatives in Motion, which aids in donating and refurbishing wheelchairs to individuals and families in need. Nothing is more powerful than the gift of independence and mobility, so come out to support a wonderful cause put on by students in the Physical Therapy program at GVSU. There will be raffles, prizes, music, snacks, drinks, and more!

Pre-Physical Therapy Club at GVSU
The Grand Valley State University Pre-PT Club promotes activities that support various Physical Therapy student priorities. Pre-PT informs members of professional development opportunities, continuing education/learning opportunities, and campus-wide events particularly relevant to Pre-PT students. Pre-PT sponsors programs and forums of particular importance to Pre-PT students. Pre-PT promotes physical therapy on the Grand Valley State University campus through public relations events, fund-raisers, and volunteer services. Pre-PT hopes to continue its fund-raising efforts in order to enhance its budget to subsidize student attendance at state, regional and national conferences.
