February 15, 2022 - New Provost Selected

Dear Campus Community,

I am delighted to share the exciting news that Dr. Fatma Mili has been chosen to be the next provost and executive vice president for Academic Affairs of the university. Mili is currently the dean of Computing and Informatics at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Many of you had the opportunity to see and hear Dr. Mili when she was on campus last month. She was among the finalists advanced by an 18-member search committee from a national pool of candidates. Our new provost earned her doctorate from the Universite Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris, France, and knows Michigan from her time at Oakland University in its School of Engineering. She later moved to Purdue University as department chair of computer information technology, becoming executive director of the TransSTEM Center. She joined UNC Charlotte in 2017.

I am confident that Dr. Mili is the right person at the right time to be our academic leader. She will be only the fourth person in Grand Valley’s 62-year history to hold the title of provost. Her academic training, professional knowledge, and her experience in university leadership have fully prepared her to take on this key role. She has spent her career working across disciplines to better equip students for rapidly evolving careers in every sector. She has a deep appreciation for liberal education and resonates with our institutional values and commitments. Throughout her career, she has worked diligently toward broadening participation and equity in education, curricular design, pedagogical innovations, and faculty and staff professional development.

Dr. Mili is engaging and thoughtful, a careful listener, and is deeply respectful of the views of others. Her demonstrated commitments to academic quality, diversity and inclusion, and creativity will serve Grand Valley well.

More information on the announcement is available on the university’s news site GVNext. Please join me in thanking the search committee and co-chairs Professors Felix Ngassa and Paul Stansbie for their dedicated work. I especially want to recognize Interim Provost Chris Plouff for his outstanding leadership during this academic year and for all that he is doing to ensure a smooth transition. Dr. Mili arrives in early July, and we look forward to having her among us.

Sincerely,

Philomena V. Mantella, President
