Kristen Childs
Studying at Grand Valley has allowed me to pursue incredible opportunities at home and abroad. I completed my courses for the International Relations major and a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) certificate in 2016. I moved to Erlangen, Germany, to complete an internship at the Friedrich-Alexander University, through the DAAD RISE scholar program. During the year after, I was a Boren Scholar at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, taking courses in Geoodesy, Geoinformation, and Slovene language.
Upon my return to the US, I became the temporary Project Coordinator for a geospatial project at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). The project investigated ways to provide evidence of human rights violations using satellite imagery. I then worked on a roving team through the Student Conservation Association (SCA) to complete land conservation projects on BLM lands in Northern California.
I have recently taken a position using my geo-spatial skills with the federal government in Washington, DC I am so grateful to have had the Fellowships Office, Hauenstein Center, Honors Office, and IR professors readily willing to support me in my pursuit of these opportunities; I would not be where I am today without them.
