Chris Williams
Chris Williams, who graduated in 2014 with a B.A. in International Relations, spent a summer in Brazil, working as an intern teaching English as a second language.
My internship was spent teaching English as a second language in the cities of São Paulo and Santos Brazil for over two months. After making contacts in that area of Brazil the previous year, I had the unique opportunity of having a support group, which helped me to adjust to the local culture while I was there. Every time I visit Brazil I fall more in love with the country, the people and the culture.
Brazil is in great need of English teachers, and the employment does pay well. What's more, it does not require a degree or a work visa. However, if you do not speak Portuguese you will not survive long while in country and your employment options will be limited. Therefore, I strongly encourage any student to take a foreign language course as it can greatly improve your chances of employment after graduation.
An instructor must remain flexible and willing to travel, often navigating the city by bus, train or driving yourself, which can be stressful and often dangerous. However, the whole experience was very enlightening and I would readily do it all over again.
