The Political Science department now has a General Education Issues course (in the Human Rights category, I-HR) offered in Fall 2017: PLS 339 Democracy and the Authoritarian Challenge

So what's it about? Here's the official catalog description for PLS 339:
Comparative examination of theories of democratization and resilience of authoritarianism. Explores regime definitions, theoretical debates of democracy and dictatorship, factors associated with democratic deepening, and the consequences for human rights protection. Includes contemporary case studies from Africa, East and South Asia, Europe and Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East.
In other words....
We will consider why some countries democratize and others maintain authoritarian regimes throughout the world, particularly in Asia, Africa, Europe, and Latin America. We will also examine how different kinds of political systems protect and abuse human rights.
For PLS majors and minors, this is a comparative politics course. For IR majors and minors, this course is a PLS course. For all students, it also is a Gen Ed Issues course (I-HR). The prerequisite is junior standing.
