Each On the Wall Artist Talk features an artist whose work is currently on view on campus discussing their creative process and how their work is influenced by other fields of study.
This On the Wall Artist Talk features an intimate in-person conversation with documentary photographer Jason Reblando. His work often focuses on the intersection of the human experience and institutional systems, touching on many fields of study including sociology, anthropology, and history, among others. Jason's work is now on view in the exhibition Canal by Canal: Photographs by Jason Reblando in the Lake Ontario Hall Wall Gallery through early December 2021. Jason Reblando is an artist and photographer based in Normal, Illinois. Notable projects by Jason include Outside Public Housing, a series of photographs and statements from a community of people whose professions are all related to public housing in Chicago; Home and Away, photographs documenting various aspects of the lives of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW); and New Deal Utopias, exploring one of the most ambitious but overlooked federal programs in American history. Jason received his MFA in Photography from Columbia College Chicago, and a BA in Sociology from Boston College. He is the recipient of a U.S. Fulbright Fellowship to the Philippines among other awards. His work has been published in the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Financial Times, Politico, Camera Austria, Slate, Bloomberg Businessweek, Marketplace, MAS Context, Real Simple, Places Journal, Chicago Magazine, the Chicago Tribune, and the Chicago Reader. His photographs are collected in the Library of Congress, the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Pennsylvania State University Special Collections, the Midwest Photographers Project of the Museum of Contemporary Photography, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Photography in the Wonsook Kim School of Art at Illinois State University.
Jason’s latest project, Canal by Canal, has a special connection to Grand Valley. This photographic series engages the natural and built environments as well as the people that comprise Valencia’s irrigation community in support of research by Dr. Erik Nordman, natural resources management professor at GVSU, for his book, The Uncommon Knowledge of Elinor Ostrom (Island Press, 2021). The resulting images are a meditation on how humans continue to shape the natural landscape, as well as a record of a communal agricultural practice that has survived wars, dictatorships, and political winds of change.
