K-12 Summer Tutoring

GVSU K-12 Summer Tutoring is available for any student in grades K-12 from June 22-August 14. This pilot program is a free virtual 1:1 tutoring service and supported by the K-12 Network of Support to help with remediation and alleviate summer loss with the extended time away from school.

Students connect with tutors through a platform called Blackboard Collaborate Ultra. A phone number is also provided should a student not have access to WIFI.

Steps for your Tutoring Session

If you have not already done so, complete a parental consent form. Parents/Guardians are required to sign a consent form PRIOR to a student working with a GVSU tutor. The consent forms are available in English or Spanish:

To signup in advance for a tutoring session, go the the  "MEET AND SELECT YOUR TUTOR" section and follow the below steps to register for a session:

  1. Choose your grade band and subject in the filter list above the list of tutors
  2. Find a Tutor who can support you in your desired content area.  There may be multiple tutors but each has different availability so find the one that works best with your schedule.
  3. Choose the best date/time slot for your session.
  4. Click “Login using Personal Email”
  5. Login
    1. If it’s your first time using the system, click “Register” on the bottom left.
    2. If you are a returning user, sign-in with the email address and password you created when you first registered.
  6. Enter your cell phone number to receive a text reminder before your session.
  7. Answer the five questions.  Answers will be shared with your tutor.
  8. Click “Submit Reservation”

You will receive a confirmation email which will include a Blackboard Collaborate Ultra tutoring link to access your session. A phone number is also provided should a student not have access to WIFI.

At the time of your session, click your tutoring link or call the indicated phone number. You will enter a waiting room and be greeted by a tutoring receptionist who will connect you with your scheduled tutor.

As we look to constantly meet the needs of our community, we welcome all feedback. After your tutoring session, you will receive an email with a link to a survey for you to share information about your experience with this pilot program.

How to have a successful tutoring session

When signing up for a session, students will share what they are struggling with or need additional support in. For example, a student may say, “I need help with understanding fractions” or “I need to practice speaking in Spanish.”

  • Have your materials with you during the session. This includes notes, textbooks, study guides, and anything else that will be useful.
  • Be prepared with specific questions that will help you make the most of the time you have with your tutor. Listen carefully to your tutor and ask questions.
  • Don’t hesitate to stop your tutor at any time during the session when you need further explanation.
  • Keep an open mind. Your tutor may have valuable suggestions about note taking, test-preparation, text reading, etc. Try to practice any study skills suggested by your tutor.

Meet and select your tutor

Tutors are made up of volunteer GVSU community members and include faculty, staff, students, alumni, retirees, etc. Volunteers have indicated grade bands and subjects they are comfortable working with and must pass a GVSU background check prior to working with students.

Additional tutors will be added over the next couple weeks so continue to check back for more scheduling options and availability.

Use the grade level and subject search filters below to find the right tutor for you.

Information for volunteer tutors

GVSU K-12 Network of Support tutors are volunteers, giving of their time and expertise to support the needs of their community. To become a part of the GVSU K-12 Network of Support as a volunteer tutor, simply follow the below steps:

  1. Complete the volunteer form. You will be asked to input your preferred grade band(s) and content area(s) to support.
  2. Complete the Background Check form that will be emailed to you after you sign up.
  3. Complete the Virtual Tutor Orientation.

Once all is complete and your background check has returned as approved, you will be provided with instructions to create your availability in the Appointment Manager website.

If a student books time to work with you, you will receive a confirmation email and your outlook calendar will be updated with that student’s name.

To become fully approved, tutors are required to complete the background check paperwork emailed to them from GVSU HR and complete the Virtual Tutor Orientation (view the linked videos and read the linked documents). If you have any questions or concerns prior to or while tutoring, please contact Chasity Bailey-Fakhoury at baileych@gvsu.edu.
