My research examines laws and policies that address social issues such as immigration, marriage and family, health and health care, and anti-poverty programs for the ways that they deploy categories of race, gender, and sexuality to produce patterns of inclusion and exclusion. I also study how communities and social justice activists negotiate these inclusions and exclusions and respond to the laws and policies that influence their everyday lives.

If you are interested in learning more about and contributing to research on how immigration, refugee, and health policies have shaped and been shaped by the lives and histories of immigrant, refugee, and/or LGBT groups in Michigan and the United States, please contact Dr. Leifa Mayers at [email protected].
