Description

As a first-generation college student, I began my higher education journey with no clear path. After being introduced to research, I learned how my personal experiences shape my scholarship. Little did I know that the questions I asked in my scholarship would also clarify my purpose, molding me into a Pan-Africanist and community-engaged scholar advocate. Join me as we discuss how scholars are informed by their work and how their work helps them find their why.

Dr. Jakia Marie ('13 & '16)is an assistant professor of Sociology, primarily teaching courses in anthropology and African and African American Diaspora studies. She holds a B.A. in liberal studies, an M.Ed. in Higher Education with an emphasis in college student affairs leadership, an M.A. in anthropology, and a Ph.D. in Pan-African studies. Dr. Marie’s work theoretically and empirically explores race, gender, ethnicity, and identity intersections within social and educational constructs in Africa and across the African Diaspora.

This event also appears on the main events calendar tagged as alumni, cuse, graduateschool, ours, sociology, and student.
