Beckman Scholars Program Faculty Mentor: David Leonard, Ph.D.

Professor Dave Leonard has taught Biochemistry in the Chemistry Department since 1998. His current research interests lie in elucidating the mechanism by which bacterial enzymes confer resistance to β-lactam antibiotics. Students in the lab use techniques such as protein purification, enzyme kinetic analysis and x-ray crystallography to characterize the β-lactamase enzymes. Some of the projects involve collaborations with other GVSU faculty including Dr. Rachel Powers (Chemistry) and Dr. Agnieszka Szarecka (CMB) or at other institutions such as Case Western Reserve University and University of Notre Dame.
