GVSU Music Faculty Members Dr. Lisa Feurzeig (musicologist) and Dr. Sookkyung Cho (piano) join Guest Artists, Airi Yoshioka (violin) and Si-Yan Li (cello) to present an evening focused on piano trios by Clara Schumann and Amy Beach.

About the performers:

Violin
Airi Yoshioka has concertized throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, and Canada as a soloist, recitalist and chamber musician. She is the founding member of Damocles Trio and Modigliani Quartet and has performed and recorded with the members of Emerson, Brentano and Arditti Quartets. An enthusiastic performer of new music, she is a principal member of Continuum, ModernWorks, Son Sonora, Azure, Ensemble Pi and RUCKUS ensembles. She has recorded for New World, Naxos, Claves, Mode, Albany and Pony Canyon records.  She has also worked as a Teaching Artist for Carnegie Hall, the New York Philharmonic and Lincoln Center Institute.  She is currently the Associate Professor of violin at University of Maryland Baltimore County.

Cello
Cellist Si-Yan Darren Li made his professional debut at the age of nine and has gone on to an active career as recitalist, chamber musician, and teacher. He has appeared at Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium, Weill Recital Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Merkin Hall, the 92nd Street Y, Kennedy Center, Victoria Concert Hall in Singapore, Izumi Hall in Osaka, Suntory Hall in Tokyo, National Concert Hall in Taipei, and the Basilica de San Lorenzo in Florence. Mr. Li has received top prizes in numerous prestigious competitions, including the Tchaikovsky International Competition in Moscow and the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in New York. He was also a recipient of the “American Masterpieces” grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Piano
Noted for her “sensitive and imaginative” (New York Concert Review) playing, Korean-born pianist Sookkyung Cho has been captivating worldwide audiences with her personal, thoughtful expressionist style. Recently accepting a position as Assistant Professor of Piano-Artist Performer at Grand Valley State University in Michigan, she is also a founding member of the New York-based Almava Trio. She has appeared in venues such as Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Chicago Cultural Center, Sarasota Opera House, Baltimore Museum of Art, Beaux concerts de la releve in Quebec, Château de Fontainebleau in France, and Zijingang Theater at Zhejiang University in China, among others, and was recently heard on Chicago’s WFMT.
