New Music Ensemble Concert

New Music Ensemble Concert

Date and Time

Thursday, April 5, 2018 7:30 PM

Description

The New Music Ensemble will perform Philip Glass's monumental composition Glassworks. Also on the program are several student compositions created in response to the recent Herbert Murrie Art Gallery show.

Glassworks remains Philip Glass's bestseller from the middle period of his career, the recording by means of which many listeners familiarized themselves with his music. Conceived as a thematically whole instrumental studio album taking advantage of the promotional and marketing capabilities of what was then Glass's new major label (CBS, now Sony Classical) and targeted at consumers intrigued with his newfound notoriety, Glassworks features six parts, alternately meditative and frenetic, that have since broken free and developed lives of their own.

This event is free and open to the public.

The New Music Ensemble at Grand Valley State University promotes the music of our time through commissions, tours, recordings, educational events, workshops, and videos. Founded in 2006 by their director Bill Ryan, the ensemble not only prepares students for careers that include contemporary music, but also help them become exceptional educators, advocates, and leaders in the music field. The group has completed 4 tours, and has been profiled in numerous publications including Newsweek and the New York Times, and featured on NPR’s Weekend Edition, All Things Considered, WNYC's Radiolab, and Performance Today. They have released three critically acclaimed recordings named to best year-end release lists by the New York Times, Washington Post, LA Weekly, Time Out Chicago, and many others. They released their most recent album "RETURN" with music composed entirely by GVSU Alumni in October 2017.
