Hayes Griffin joined the Grand Valley State University faculty in 2016, where he currently teaches History of Rock and Roll. He holds a B.A. in Guitar Performance from Denison University, where he was active in their bluegrass program, and an M.M. in Contemporary Improvisation from the New England Conservatory.

In addition to teaching at GVSU, Hayes remains an active performer in the folk and bluegrass world. Upon completing his Master’s at NEC, Hayes toured roughly 270 days per year for four years with renowned Canadian fiddler April Verch. Their travels took them all over the United States, Canada, and much of the European continent. In October of 2015, Hayes joined the Kentucky-based bluegrass band NewTown and currently maintains an active tour schedule with them. Hayes also teaches private lessons in guitar, mandolin, and bass in Western Michigan.
