Michigan Cares for Tourism hosted it's first event on October 6 and 7 in the Waterloo Recreation Area’s Historic Mill Lake Outdoor Center in Chelsea, Michigan part of “Michigan’s "Big 400", "where small town living meets great big fun". Clean-up effort included removing all furnishings and damaged walls and ceilings, staining the exterior, and clearing debris. This effort begins a commitment by the DNR to fully restore the cabins and infrastructure to once again welcome visitors.
Built in 1936, this cabin community welcomed urban youth to their first travel and outdoor recreation experience. Closed due to disrepair in 2000, 18 of 21 original buildings exist.
Waterloo Recreation Area is the largest state park in the Lower Peninsula and is home to campgrounds, swimming beaches, trails, the Gerald E. Eddy Discovery Center and more.
