Welcome New LMB Members!

With the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, we will adhere to all GVSU policies concerning on-campus interactions/planning as they are updated. At this point, we are planning to hold Band Camp as scheduled. Any changes will be immediately communicated to all LMB Members by e-mail and phone calls.

Summer Advising / Class Registration Days

Registering for Marching Band

  1. Please contact Dr. Martin by e-mail (marjohnt@gvsu.edu) or call (616) 328-1500 with any questions your may have before your Summer Advising / Class Registration.
  2. Inform your summer orientation advisors that you ARE a member of the Laker Marching Band when planning your fall schedule.
  3. Register for marching band (MUS 107 Section 01 or Section 02) for your fall schedule. Marching band is a 1 credit class. Those who have NOT auditioned can go ahead and register for marching band or need to keep the marching band time open (M,W,F 4-5:50 & Tuesday 6-7:30 p.m.) in your fall schedule and can add the class after a successful audition.

**Please remember that MUS 107 is a tuition refund class, only if you register for more than 15 credits in the fall. After you pay for the additional credit(s) above 15, one of the credits above 15 becomes the marching band credit, and you will be refunded the full 1 credit tuition amount in November. Uniform Fitting Summer Schedule & Information

**PLEASE NOTE THAT THE MARCHING FUNDAMENTAL DAY OPTIONS HAVE BEEN RENAMED AS UNIFORM FITTINGS DAYS!

A. 2021 Color Guard

  • July 10 or July 11, 2021 at the Color Guard Auditions or Color Guard Clinic Day.
    • Mrs. Sikkema, GVSU Color Guard Instructor, will collect sizes for all members.
    • Anyone with a conflict on July 10 or 11 must email Mrs. Sikkema (beckaliz01@yahoo.com).
    • All Color Guard members are REQUIRED to choose "I live more than 3 hours away, or have already completed Uniform Fitting...." on the online "2021 Band Camp Registration Form for your Uniform Fitting Day selection

B. 2021 Drumline

  • July 10 and July 11, 2021 at the Drumline Auditions.
    • Anyone with a conflict on July 10 or 11 must email Dr. Martin (GVSULMB@gvsu.edu).
    • All Drumline members are REQUIRED to choose "I live more than 3 hours away, or have already completed Uniform Fitting...." on the online "2021 Band Camp Registration Form for your Uniform Fitting Day selection

C. 2021 New Woodwind and Brass LMB Members

  • All are REQUIRED to choose either August 7 or Aug. 14 on the online "2021 Band Camp Registration Form for your Uniform Fitting Day selection.
    • The online "Band Camp Registration Form" will open on July 15 and close on August 3.
    • Each member will schedule a 20-minute appointment through a Google Doc form.
    • Members that need to have their Uniform Bibbers hemmed, can take their bibbers with them. Bibbers must be hemmed to the required length before August 18, 2021.

With the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, we will adhere to all GVSU policies concerning on-campus interactions/planning as they are updated. The Full Band Camp in August is a regular schedule. If any changes are made, then the LMB members will be immediately contacted once it has been finalized.

A. Band Camp Registration
 

  1. The online Band Camp Registration Form will be open by July 15
  2. All LMB members are requested to submit their registration on July 15. The registration form will close August 3.

B. Band Camp Information

1. Check- In / Campus Housing Move-In 

 

All members MUST check in at Band Room before moving into your GVSU Housing assignment!

  • Check In is located in the Band Room (Haas Center for Performing Arts, Room 1515) between 8 a.m.–12 p.m.
  • You should arrive as early as possible to get your housing information/key and allow plenty of time to unload.
  • Any member who has checked out a GVSU-owned instrument (Mellophone, Baritone or Sousaphone) for the summer must bring the instrument to registration to be rechecked out (new contract) for the fall semester.

 

Check In Date Schedule:

  • Color Guard and Drumline Check In / Move In - Wednesday, August 18
  • New Woodwind/Brass Member Check In / Move In – Thursday, August 19
  • Returner Check In / Move In – Friday, August 20


2. Housing

If you are living in campus housing during the school year, arrangements have been made for you to move into your dorm or living center for band camp at no cost to you. Do not call the housing office. The band has informed them of your early move-in date. When you register at band camp you will be given instructions on where to pick up your key.

Move - In Schedule / All members MUST check in at Band Room before going to your Housing assignment (See Schedule, Section 8. below)

  • Color Guard and Drumline - Wednesday, August 18
  • New Woodwind/Brass Members - Thursday, August 19
  • Returning Members - Friday, August 20

Please indicate your housing status on the online Band Camp Registration Form. If you are planning to live off-campus during the academic year, you should contact your individual landlord to make arrangements for early move-in. This is usually not a problem but if a conflict should occur, please contact us and we will assist you in finding accommodations during band camp.

3. Meals

There is no charge for meals during band camp. For your health and well being, everyone is required to attend all meals. 

Meals will be provided with the exceptions:

Those with a GVSU unlimited meal plan will use their meal cards when we eat at campus dining beginning Sunday, August 22.

4. Instruments / Equipment

The following school-owned marching instruments are available at no charge; however, the student is liable for any damage, or if the instrument is lost/stolen:

Baritones • Drumline • Mellophones • Sousaphones • Color Guard

If you need to use any school-owned instrument this year, please indicate that on the Band Camp Registration Form. Arrangements can be made to pick up your instrument early by contacting Dr. Martin at GVSULMB@gvsu.eduor by phone at (616) 328-1500.

5. Flip Folders and Lyres

  • Lyres - All wind players and percussionists are required to have a lyre for your instrument (Piccolo players will need an arm lyre). GVSU provides lyres for the following university owned instruments: mellophones, baritones, and snare. Sousaphones do not use a lyre.
  • Flip folders- ALL WIND AND PERCUSSION MEMBERS must provide your own flip folder with a minimum of 15 pages. 


6. Band Camp Costs / Fees / Travel Expenses

  • Total of $50 per LMB Member
    • The Band Camp Registration Fee is $40 that covers social activities and other necessary costs during band camp. All Members are required to pay this fee.
    • The Uniform Cleaning Fee is $10. All Members are required to pay this fee.
  • New members are provided: LMB Baseball Cap, Winter Knit Cap, LMB T-shirt, marching gloves, and LMB Scarf.
  • Returners are provided with the LMB T-Shirt, gloves, 3rd Year Hoodie or 4th Year Jacket, and LMB Scarf. 
  • Returners can order a replacement Winter Knit Hat and/or LMB Baseball cap, but must e-mail GVSULMB@gvsu.edu with requested item(s) and size(s). You will pay for the items at band camp. (LMB T-shirt - $10.00 / Winter Knit Hat - $5.00 / LMB Baseball cap - $24.00)
  • Marching Shoes
    • ​​All wind and percussion members are responsible for black marching shoes (i.e. Drillmasters, Dingles, etc.), lyre, and flip folder expenses. 
    • Color Guard members are responsible for your shoes; Mrs. Sikkema will provide information.
    • All shoes (Winds, Percussion, & Color Guard) can be bought at a Music Store or Orefice LTD. If you choose to order from Orefice, they will deliver the shoes to the Haas Center for Performing Arts and will be distributed when they arrive on campus. To order through Orefice, use their separate order form (the form opens July 15). The deadline to order through Orefice with this special delivery option is August 9.
  • All travel expenses are covered by GVSU Bands and each student will be given a per diem (cash) for meals while traveling. 


7. Items Needed For Band Camp

• Comfortable, loose fitting clothes • Suntan lotion • Flip folder • Music lyre

• Tennis shoes with socks • Sunglasses • Pencil • Baseball cap • Water Bottle • Valve oil, cork grease, etc. SANDALS / FLIPFLOPS ARE NOT PERMITTED! • Spending Money


8. Band Camp Schedule

** Band Camp will end at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 25

Starting Monday, August 30, we will begin normal marching band rehearsal time M,W,F 4:00 p.m. to 5:50 p.m. and Tuesday 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

 


Accessing the "Members Only" area on the LMB Website

The "Members Only" of the Laker Marching Band (LMB) website contains all of your music (Pregame), drill charts (Pregame & Shows), Pregame & Alma Mater audio tracks, and other important documents for the LMB members.

To Access the "Members Only" area:

  1. Enter the first part of your GVSU e-mail (example - marjohnt@mail.gvsu.edu, then my username = marjohnt)
  2. Enter your password for your GVSU e-mail account


**If you have not activated your GVSU e-mail, then you will need to use the default username and password listed below:

Pregame and Show Music and Charts

Pregame Music and Charts

  1. Check your Pregame Part Assignment and Download your music from the "Members Only" area under "Charts and Music," then "Pregame Music and Charts"
    **Pregame Charts will be handed out at Band Camp.
  2. WAIVED for 2021 - Begin memorization of the Pregame Show by following the Memorization Schedule listed in the next section: Page A, Alma Mater, Star Spangled Banner, Page B, Page C, Page D, Page E, Page F, Page G, and #38 GVSU Tag.
  3. Pregame rehearsal recordings for each part for each Pregame tune are located in the "Members Only" area under "Charts and Music," then "Pregame Music and Charts."

Show Music and Charts

  1. Half Time Shows are not memorized., Members will use their flip folder.
  2. Check your Halftime Part Assignment from the "Members Only" area under "Charts and Music," then "2021 Show #1 Music and Charts."
    **Show #1 Music will be issued to each member in late July / Show #2 Music can be downloaded from the LMB website / Members Only / Music and Charts / 2021 Show #2
    **2021 Show #1 Charts will be handed out at Band Camp.
  3. Show #1 recordings for each song are located in the menu under "2021 Season", then "Halftime shows".

WAIVED FOR 2021! - Pregame Music Memorization Videos and Submission Process

No Pregame Memorization Requirement for 2021

Each wind & percussion member (including section leaders) will send an e-mail to GVSULMB@gvsu.edu that contains hyperlinks to “unlisted” Youtube videos that show you playing your part to different sections of Pregame music memorized. Please review the "Youtube Video Uploading" instructions on the Youtube site or contact your section leader for assistance.     

  1. You must face the camera and be at least 6 feet away from camera.
  2. Take the marked tempos for each tune and have a metronome ticking during your videos.
    • Video 1 – Pregame A (mm=140) - Suggested Upload Third Week of June 
    • Video 2 - Alma Mater (mm=88), National Anthem (mm=96) - Suggested Upload Fourth Week of June
    • Video 3 – Pregame B (mm=140) - Suggested Upload First Week of July
    • Video 4 - Pregame C (mm=104) - Suggested Upload Second Week of July
    • Video 5 - Pregame D (mm=140), Pregame E (mm=140) - Suggested Upload Third Week of July
    • Video 6 – Pregame F (mm=140) - Suggested Upload Fourth Week of July

Marching Fundamental Preparation

While all LMB members march the half time shows, Pregame is an alternate based show where the best marchers and players are chosen at band camp. All members should  prepare by studying the marching fundamental handbook and videos.

Please look over the parts and memorize the lyrics before band camp. We will either sing or play the Alma Mater in our Pregame show.
