About the Symposium

On March 4th & 5th, 2019, Grand Valley State University Libraries hosted a symposium for the Statewide & Regional Stepping Stones to the National Digital Platform Project. The goal of the symposium was to foster community discussions about the necessary organizational resources that would be needed to lay the foundation for a future digital preservation network that can serve the state of Michigan and the surrounding region.

The two-day program included:

  • Updates on the results from a statewide survey undertaken in the summer/fall of 2018 to assess digital preservation readiness;
  • Progress reports on national-level field research being undertaken to document best practices in digital preservation network-building and sustainability;
  • Presentations from expert consultants from three major state-based networks and from the Educopia Institute, an international leader in community cultivation

Between report-outs and presentations, attendees engaged in facilitated community discussions and began the work of defining the organizational resources and the roadmap for laying a functional foundation for a future state/regional network. The symposium schedule and program are below. A draft community white paper summarizing the conversations and recommendations is available on our Project Research page.
