Information access and library resources change rapidly. Stay up to date with professional development workshops offered by University Libraries. We can bring custom workshops to your department or unit, and from time to time we host open workshops for the whole campus.
Current workshop offerings and registration available at http://www.gvsu.edu/sprout. Below are a few examples of past workshops. Let us know what you are interested in and we will design a custom workshop for you. Contact your liaison librarian (gvsu.edu/library/librarians) or Mary O'Kelly (email@example.com) for more information.
Zotero is a free citation manager that allows you to save citation information while searching databases, websites, and the GVSU library catalog. Zotero saves citations with a single click and enables you to create customized bibliographies in hundreds of citation styles, including MLA, Chicago, APA, and journal-specific styles. This hands-on workshop will introduce some of the basic functions of Zotero such as: installing Zotero; capturing, organizing, and managing your citations; creating a bibliography, and using the Microsoft Word plug-in to insert in-text citations into your documents. Participants are encouraged to bring their laptops so that they may download and begin using the program.
Not all students come to college knowing specialized terms such as scholarly article or academic journal. Join us to discuss the vocabulary of higher education (and information literacy in particular) and examine your syllabus and course materials in order to identify potentially confusing language. Learn ways to collaborate with your librarian to help students succeed.
Open Educational Resources—textbooks and other course materials which are free to access, share, and remix—are a hot topic in higher education. With textbook costs skyrocketing, OER can help make students’ education more affordable, but they also offer instructors more flexibility and more potential for customization. In this session, you will explore collections of high-quality OER, learn ways to leverage OER for engaging and effective courses, and discuss opportunities for assessing the impact of OER.
Learn advanced tips and tricks such as using Google to bypass a clunky website, changing settings to get Google to search the library collection, special codes that quickly narrow search results, and more. You’re already using Google - this hands-on workshop will show you new ways to use it better.
Did you know the Libraries provide access to thousands of streaming films? Spanning most disciplines and including educational, cinema, documentary, and some television, our streaming collections are here to support and supplement the curriculum. Attend this workshop to learn how you can find relevant streaming video for use in face-to-face or online courses. This workshop will also include instructions on how to link or embed video in BlackBoard, and how to create playlists and clips.
