First-Year Student Checklist

We understand that college, and all of the things you have to do before you arrive to campus in the fall, can be overwhelming! We hope this incoming first-year student checklist helps!

April

Month of April: Sign up for registration and orientation

May 1: Housing application deadline and last day to get your $150 security deposit back if you cancel

May 17: My College Roomie roommate match deadline. MCR is more than just a roommate finder, though. Use it to make friends with other new Lakers!

May 17:  Housing style preference deadline. Be sure to update any last minute changes to your housing style requests via your myHousing portal. 

Month of May: Assignments are being made and will continue throughout June!

Attend the Parent & Supporter Orientation virtually:  Take the Online Module, where GV staff give an overview of specifics on the individual campus areas on campus (ie Housing, Dining, Public Safety, Student Life, etc.)

After finishing the Online Module, attend a Virtual Q & A session: Parents and supporters are encouraged to attend a virtual Q & A session, focused on all things housing!  Housing staff will answer your questions live.

June

Mid June: First-year student assignments will be sent to your GVSU email and posted in your myHousing portal!

Mid June: Room Change waiting list will open for students requesting a change of placement. Details on how to request a room change will be sent soon after notification of placements are distributed. 

After Assignment Notification: Once you know where you are placed for fall, meal plan changes may be made. Plan flexibility is based on the housing style,  If you will be living in a style that does not come with a meal plan automatically, like Niemeyer or Murray Living Centers or Winter Hall, we have choices to fit your lifestyle and budget. Requests for Alternate Arrival Date: Students are assigned specific dates/times to arrive on campus, but we attempt to accommodate early or late arrivals to fit student schedules. Students may request alternate arrivals via our website. Request form opens in July.
