Submission Materials Please submit all of the following:
  1. Your self-assessment. Instructions: You should first complete on your own the "Self Assessment for Prospective Students". In a few paragraphs, please explain how your self-assessment affirms your decision to apply to the Meijer Honors College. In your description, please also address any factors we should consider with regard to your qualifications (e.g., if you do not meet the ACT and/or GPA expectations).

  2. An essay. Please answer one of the following as thoughtfully as you can in an essay of at least a page or two. The essay should be an original composition that addresses one of the prompts, not a previously written piece or something adapted from another occasion.

    1. In a recent column, New York Times writer David Brooks says there used to be certain milestones that young adults were directed toward by age 27: leaving home, becoming financially independent, getting married, buying a house, having a child. But with changes to the economy and to society in general, Brooks claims, today's young people measure their growth in very different ways. What milestones would you say are most important to you as you move toward adulthood?
    2. Describe the lasting personal or professional value of a volunteer or part-time position you have held.
    3. Consider this assertion: To truly understand your own culture no matter how you define it requires personal knowledge of at least one other culture, one that is distinctly different from your own. Write about an experience you've had with another culture and how that experience provided insight into your own culture.
    4. There has been a lot of talk in recent years about the value of a college education. Many students and their families make great sacrifices in order to pursue a college degree. In your view, is a college education worth the time, effort, and cost involved in the pursuit? If you were not enrolled in college, what else would you consider pursuing?

  3. A sample of your best analytical writing from a recent course. Preferably, this should be a research paper.
