MarcQus Wright

MarcQus Wright, Director of TRiO Student Support services, started working in the Housing Department at Grand Valley in 2005. A positive man with a healthy mindset, MarcQus maintains his healthy mindset by practicing mindfulness. Using mindfulness, he focuses on living in the moment each day. He even tries to meditate on his commute to and from work to relax his mind. Trying to maintain a positive attitude each day can be difficult, so MarcQus stays motivated by watching documentaries, reading books, gardening, and spending time exercising with his kids.

“It’s a journey to keep a healthy lifestyle.”

MarcQus also makes sure to read and watch anything that will increase his knowledge in healthy living and the food industry. He feels he can control his lifestyle and make healthier choices by growing his own food, as well. When making meals for his family, each meal must contain a “live food,” as he dubs fresh foods. He suggests live foods can come from your own garden or from a local Farmers Market, and MarcQus has been a strong advocate and attender of Grand Valley’s annual Farmers Market for years.

This year, he is debuting his own stall at the GVSU Farmers Market – Daddy’s Dough – where he will be selling homemade cookies. At his seven-year-old daughter’s recommendation, he started the business in part to help his daughter learn how a business is run and just for pure fun. Though he has a love of baking, he is quick to remember everything in moderation to maintain his healthy lifestyle.

“Do something you know you can change. When people make mistakes, they tend to beat themselves up for them, [but] its okay to make mistakes.”

MarcQus also leads an active lifestyle, finding inspiration in exercising with his children. Using his Fitbit, he actively works on getting his 10,000 steps in each day. Because it can seem hard to reach exercise and health goals, he says to set goals that are achievable. Having a partner, too, in his wife, has really helped both of them to stay healthy because they keep each other honest. Having someone work on goals with you can help to give the extra push you need.
