Ride-Along Program
Do you dream of becoming a police officer or working in law enforcement, but aren’t sure exactly what it’s like?
The Police Ride-Along program allows civilians* to accompany a police officer in a police vehicle during their tour of duty.
This educational opportunity is perfect for students interested in this field of work but aren’t entirely sure what to expect. It is a wonderful learning opportunity for anyone interested in better understanding police operations at the university.
*The ride along program is available to currently registered students of Grand Valley State University whose emphasis is Criminal Justice, those interested in a police recruit position, or at the discretion of the Chief of Police.

Step 1: Fill out the ride-along waiver and application
Step 2: Bring the completed forms to the Grand Valley State Police Department and contact Sergeant Andrew Dusendang.
Note: Completing this form does not guarantee that your ride-along request will be approved.
Step 3: We will review your application details and reach out to you to schedule a ride-along.

Can I choose when and who I ride-along with?
We cannot guarantee it but we always do our best to accommodate your desired shift, date, time, and officer.
How many ride-alongs can I go on in a year?
Observers are allowed to participate in up to two rides per year. Please note that each time an observer participates, they must complete an application and waiver liability form.
What should I wear?
We recommend that you wear something professional but comfortable. Similar to what one may wear to an interview or other professional networking event.
Inappropriate clothing including but not limited to: tank tops, shorts, concert shirts, or shirts with crude language or images are not permitted.
Can I bring my phone or camera?
No, observers are not allowed to possess any electronic devices (recorder, camera, cell phone, etc.) while on a ride along.
What if I need to cancel?
Not a problem, we just ask that you give us a call! Notify the Dispatch Center at least twenty-four hours prior to your designated shift if possible.
