Two Lanthorn advertising staff members earned honors at the 41st Annual National College Newspaper Business & Advertising Managers Convention, held April 3-7, in San Diego. The CNBAM organization focuses on the business side of college newspapers and hosts seminars to help students and advisers improve their college media and performance of staff members.
Angela Carollo, Lanthorn advertising manager, is a junior advertising/public relations major from West Branch. She was elected to the single student seat on the organization’s executive board. This is a one-year position and includes assisting with planning and organizing the next two national student/advisor conventions. She will also present an “Issues Facing Student Managers” session at the convention. CNBAM will cover her travel expenses.
“I ran against four other students from all over the United States,” said Carollo. “To win the position, you must receive a majority of votes after giving a brief speech. Each school in attendance at the meeting got one vote.”
Arianna Fuoco, the Lanthorn’s assistant advertising manager, is a junior advertising/communication studies major. She and her eight-person team won the advertising “pitch project” competition at the convention. Each of the 17 teams consisted of random students from various schools who worked together to create and pitch a cohesive marketing plan for a hypothetical situation within a two-minute time limit.
“Both students were very excited to represent Grand Valley at the national conference,” said Larry Beery, associate professor in the School of Communications and Lanthorn adviser. “They are fine examples of Grand Valley students winning national honors.”
