The Data Science Society Completes Inaugural Competition

The Data Science and Analytics program’s Registered Student Organization (RSO) was founded in Fall 2020 by DSA graduate students: Tyler Reed, Murtaza Badshah, Krysta Rydecki, Chenfeng Hao, and Luke Leffler. The RSO ‘Data Science Society’ (DSS) was created  as a way for students to connect and gain additional knowledge about the field. DSS is a hub that provides opportunities for students, faculty, and local businesses to collaborate and solve real-world problems in the community.

In May 2021, DSS hosted the Inaugural Annual Data Science Contest. The Data Set Host and sponsor of the event, Service Express Inc., is a local Grand Rapids company that partnered with DSS to make this contest happen. Here is how it worked:

  • The Data Set Host gives students a data set or multiple data sets
  • Students prepare and analyze said data set(s) to display results as a poster or dashboard
  • Students submit required materials for viewing by the panel of judges
  • Judges select winners
  • Winners receive prizes and are encouraged to add their accomplishments to their resume

Eleven students participated in the 28-day competition, making it a fun challenge for everyone involved. The Data Science and Analytics Program considers the event a great success and cannot wait to work on planning next year’s contest!

Huge congrats to Kanyanee and Benjamin for winning the award of Best Overall Analysis and Claire and Ian for the award of Best Presentation!
