Success in GVSU's Spectrum Health EMBA Program

GVSU is going into their fifth year partnered with Spectrum Health offering a two-year fully accredited Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) program for their employees. Students graduate fully equipped to be successful in the dynamic and developing health care industry.

The program is highly competitive and includes a one-on-one interview with an executive team member from Spectrum Health. After careful consideration, twenty-two clinical and non-clinical individuals are chosen.

Requirements to apply include:

  • Be an active Spectrum Health employee
  • Completion of talent profile
  • Have been employed for at least one year at the time of application submission
  • Have a VP endorsement and upline recommendation
  • “High Performing” rating for most recent performance
  • Completion of a bachelor’s degree at time of application
  • Exempt employee status

The curriculum includes health-care focused courses in addition to a capstone project that is sponsored by Spectrum Health’s executive team. Each project has the potential to be implemented in Spectrum Health’s system.

The program has been highly successful. Fifty-two percent of individuals in the program were promoted, while eighteen percent were positively moved in some way in their position. One hundred percent of people recommended the program to a colleague. Seventy-seven percent strongly agreed that the program fit within their career needs at that time, while twenty-three percent agreed. Seventy-four percent of participants were very satisfied with the program, while twenty-six percent were satisfied. Sixty-four percent of capstone projects were implemented.

Although the program has already been highly effective, Spectrum Health is constantly looking for ways to improve the program by personally asking students for feedback on the classes and their overall experiences. The biggest takeaway from every year that students highlight is the value in the networking and peer to peer learning that takes place within the program. Spectrum Health is proud of this successful partnership with GVSU and is excited to continue to positively impact the community by increasing the health knowledge of their employees. Spectrum Health and GVSU are searching for other partnerships that can be made due to the success of this program.
