Athletic Training Graduate Student Presents at GLATA Annual Meeting

Alyssa Dall, a GVSU graduate student of the Master’s of Athletic Training program, had the opportunity to present at the Great Lakes Athletic Trainers Association’s (GLATA) annual meeting in March.

GLATA is a professional membership association for athletic trainers and athletic training students located in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin. Their mission aims to enhance quality of care in physically active patients, support athletic trainers, and advance the athletic training profession through education and research.

Dall presented her case study about a proximal fibula stress fracture in an adolescent female endurance runner. The cause of the runner’s injury included downhill running, calf atrophy, excessive running, and suspected metabolic factors.

“The fibula only bares 17% of your weight which means a fibula stress fracture only has an incidence of 33% in female endurance runners, and a proximal one is twice as rare,” said Dall.

The graduate student expressed she was inspired by this particular case study and patient which led her to choose this case for her presentation.

“I chose this case study because it was a patient from my clinical site that I got to help with from injury through the process of diagnosis,” she said. “It was awesome to see her go from injury to rehabilitation to now being back for track season!”

Dall is on track to graduate in April of 2023. Awesome job, Alyssa!
