Description

What is the geology under your classroom? How did the gypsum mining impact the Grand River? What role did gypsum play in the history and development of Grand Rapids?

This workshop will have two parts.

The morning will be spent learning about Michigan’s rock and mineral resources and local geologic history in an engaging presentation. Ready-to-go lessons and rock and mineral kits will be provided to all school teams, including a lesson on what the rock and mineral layers (with samples) below West Michigan classrooms.

The afternoon will be spent doing a interactive, hands-on workshop using archival and primary source material to explore the gypsum and mining industries in Grand Rapids. The session will focus on the history, impact and legacy of these industries. Copies of the material and questions will be provided that you can take back to your classrooms.
